Professional voice users such as teachers, politicians and others whose role involves a significant amount of public speaking often suffer with voice problems, especially since many do not have the benefit of any voice training. Since their voice is so crucial to their roles, this can be a significant problem.
Understanding the voice
When you speak or sing, your breath causes the vocal folds in your larynx to vibrate, and these vibrations resonate in the spaces of your nose, mouth, throat and chest. When you use your voice correctly, the sound should begin with a deep, natural breath from the diaphragm.
It is possible to speak without using the diaphragm, forcing the sound from your throat, and it is this sort of speaking which is often the cause of voice problems. If you shout or whisper, you are more likely to strain your voice since it is harder to engage your diaphragm.
