Introduction

It is often said that "it is not the idea that one makes mistakes, but that they learn from them." Many have lived their lives by this principle and reaped the benefits of it. However, for some groups, this principle may not hold true. An example of such people are ex-felons. Though, they may have realized the errors of their ways ,and set out to change, society often views them as a permanent criminal. Case Manager/ Ex-felon Timothy Barr said that, "once you get a felony it is with you for life. The Lord forgives you but society don't." For many ex-felons this can be a great burden. As a result of this, many return to their former ways, which often leads them back to prison.

Research from Pew Charitable trust(a non profit organization that seeks to improve public policy and address social issues) supports this, by mentioning that the recidivism rate between the years of 2004-2007 was 43.3 percent (Pew Safety Performance Project, 2011, p 11). Some of the challenges that often lead to recidivism among ex-offenders are , " low paying jobs, unaffordable housing, domestic relations (child support) agencies, and adult probation. Often, when faced with life challenges people often resort to what they know" mentions Barr.
