Sometimes grown children need to help their parents advocate for the correct care. One of the things elderly are reluctant to ask for, or unknowledgeable about, is medical equipment. Medical equipment can help a chronically ill patient stay in the home longer and improve the quality of care that the caregiver is able to provide. Physicians may not offer the equipment unless asked, therefore it is important that caregivers understand what equipment is needed and to advocate for the equipment.

Helping an Elderly or Sick Parent Move Around the House

For example, if an ill person is unable to walk but needs to be moved around the home, a caregiver can ask the physician for a wheelchair. There are three classifications of wheelchairs that Medicare and most health insurance will cover. First, a patient will qualify to rent a standard wheelchair if he or she is unable to walk and unable to propel a chair. These chairs are heavier than some options, the sides will remove which allows for easier transfer, and they can be fitted with leg rests. If the caregiver is not strong enough to maneuver a standard wheelchair, the caregiver should request a geriatric or transport wheelchair. These chairs have four small wheels and will be easier to fold and lift into cars. The patient will not be able to self-propel these chairs as no wheels are large enough for the patient to reach. Lastly, if the patient has the potential to self-propel but not enough strength to propel a standard chair, he or she may qualify for a light weight wheelchair. These chairs also have removable sides and leg rests are available.
