For a few small islands, Britain and Ireland have some big drives. With places like the English Lake District, Scottish Highlands, Welsh Mountains and Irish coasts, some of the best of the scenery can only be enjoyed by hitting the open road and touring around. Here's a selection of ten of the best drives across all of the United Kingdom and Ireland, although the list could be fifty-strong and still not disappoint.
Some of these 'best of' British and Irish drives have been described in detail elsewhere on Suite101, so look for the links.

ENGLAND
Around the Cornish Coast
For many people the Cornish coast is the most beautiful and dramatic part of England. The Cornish Coastal Path is justifiably famous, but a Cornish coastal drive is hard to beat too. Start in the fishing port of Portreath on the north coast and head west. It's 15 miles to the holiday resort and artistic community at St Ives. Drive on through Zennor and all along the coast to Land's End. From here simply head back along the south coast of Cornwall, and on no account miss the Lizard Peninsula, perhaps ending the drive in Falmouth. Total distance is about 100 miles.
